“Invested” by Danielle Town: Book Review

Posted on August 15, 2023August 15, 2023 by Jeremy Shirey

Introduction to “Invested”

Starting to invest can be intimidating, especially for those who have little to no experience in the stock market. In her book “Invested: How I Learned to Master My Mind, My Fears, and My Money to Achieve Financial Freedom and Live a More Authentic Life (with a Little Help from Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger, and My Dad),” Danielle Town shares her journey of not wanting anything to do with investing to learning to invest by following the value investing principles of Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger, two of the most successful investors of all time.

In this review, I will share my thoughts on the book and explain why I believe it is excellent for anyone interested in learning how to change your mindset to invest in the stock market.

Learning to Invest the Buffett-Munger Way

The book begins with Danielle Town sharing her struggles with feeling overworked, tired, and wanting a change in her life.  After conversations with her father, She chronicles her path from investing novice to a confident investor learning how to invest in a way that aligns with her values. With the help and guidance of her father, notable investor Phil Town, she decides to follow the principles of Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger, two legendary investors who have made billions by investing in simple, understandable businesses with strong competitive advantages and long-term growth potential.  At the heart of “Invested” lies the concept of value investing.

Danielle’s journey is one of self-discovery as she learns to master her emotions and become a more disciplined investor. She shares her experiences of attending the annual Berkshire Hathaway shareholder meeting and meeting Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger in person, as well as her conversations with her dad, who is also an experienced investor.

Key Takeaways

Throughout the book she focuses on the importance of investing in what you know and believe in. Danielle Town emphasizes the need for investors to do their own research and understand the businesses they are investing in. By investing in companies that align with their values and beliefs, investors can feel more confident in their investments and make better decisions.

A prevailing theme throughout the book is the importance of mindful decision-making. Danielle’s journey underscores the significance of questioning assumptions, understanding motives, and conquering emotional biases that can sway investment choices. With constant market volatility and information overload from financial media, this theme serves as a guiding light for readers seeking clarity amidst uncertainty.

The book also emphasizes the importance of patience and long-term thinking when it comes to investing. Danielle Town encourages readers to focus on the long-term potential of their investments and not to get caught up in short-term fluctuations in the stock market.

Beyond its focus on investing, “Invested” advocates for a holistic perspective on financial well-being. The book encourages readers to cultivate a mindful relationship with money, fostering a transformative shift in their financial mindset.

“Invested” is filled with practical tips and advice for new investors. Danielle Town provides step-by-step instructions on how to open a brokerage account, how to evaluate a company’s financial statements, how to find the true value of a company, and how to create a diversified portfolio. The book is written in a clear and accessible manner, making it easy for beginners to understand the concepts and principles of investing.

Conclusion

Invested is a great read for anyone interested in learning how to invest in the stock market and how to take personal ownership of your finances. By following the principles of value investing, Danielle Town provides a sensible and effective approach to investing that emphasizes the importance of doing your own research, investing in what you know and believe in, and taking a long-term view. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced investor, this book is a must-read for anyone looking to improve their investing skills and build long-term wealth.
